Our 2026 Awarding Judge – Todd Zuithof

Inspiring concept and interesting composition not only mark the journey’s beginning for
fashioning a valuable and celebrated work of art, they also define the starting point for
the paintings of Michigan artist Todd Zuithof. Once these foundational elements are
established in his paintings, the journey continues by solidifying values as well as color
harmony. Scale, interval, and rhythm are all scrutinized and adjusted in a playful
manner during this process. Finally, refinements are made to texture, color harmony
and temperature, as well as diminished and augmented details. A finale of highlights
and signature celebrate the culmination of the artwork’s journey.

Inspired by many of the great classic and contemporary artists, Zuithof seeks to exercise
his unique style by leveraging careful observation, strong drawing skills, and lyrical
brushwork. Thoughtful color selections also mark one of the tenants of the artist’s
method. Formative years for the artist include memories of sun-filled landscapes
featuring fields, streams, and lakes of the Midwest. The effects of changing light as it
interacts with its targeted subjects have always been an inspiration. Aesthetics of cars,
boats and architecture have inspired the artist and provided excellent reference material
for superimposing a score. A formal education in Architecture and a variety of
experience in the workplace have all added to the mindset of Zuithof as he approaches
the easel. Workforce and field experience include Architectural and Interior Design,
Drafting & Illustration, CAD, 3D Modeling and Visualization, Photoshop, Graphics and
Web, Photography, Building Trades, and Mission Work. Drawing from experience helps
the artist form paintings, but discerning thoughts and careful refinements lead him to a
finished work.
