Susan Fernholz came to Painting later in life because Art was always waiting  for her.

Her first career was as a Registered Nurse and after 20 years she returned to Central Michigan University and received a B.A.A. Degree in 2-dimensional Art.  She won The Student Annual Juried Exhibition Alumni Studio award that year also.

She paints representational in oil, pastel or acrylic and enjoys all genres but especially “ Plein Aire.”   She travels in summer to attend Plein air events in Michigan and has traveled to Italy to paint .

Attempting to catch a “moment in time”, a mood or feeling , the light, mystery etc. in her subjects is a challenge  welcomed, and hopefully felt by her audience. She has been told that her paintings “speak” to them

In her studio, Artemisia’s Gallery in St. Johns MI, she teaches art classes in painting.

Roger Dale Brown, Albert Handel, and Ken Cadwallader are a few of the current day Masters whom she has studied under.  Her past influences in history have been John Singer Sargent,  Edgar Payne,  Mary Cassatt.  She finds current day Richard Schmids’ work awe-inspiring.

She has won awards for her paintings and the latest was First Place at Clinton County Arts Center May 2019 Plein Aire Event. Her paintings are displayed in public and private collections. She is a member of local art associations and Oil Painters of America.
